The Sugar Industry
In the 1960s, the sugar industry paid three Harvard scientists the equivalent of ~$50,000 to say heart disease was most likely caused by saturated fat. After their report was published in JAMA, diets concentrating on low fat gained the endorsement of many health authorities. A researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, and published last year in JAMA Internal Medicine, suggests that five decades of research into the role of nutrition and heart disease, including many of today’s dietary recommendations, may have been largely shaped by the sugar industry.
